Bahirdar, January 14, 2008 (WIC) - Carter Center said it would implement an integrated malaria and trachoma program with 191 million birr in Amhara State during the coming five years.
Speaking at the opening of the sixth trachoma program conference today, State Health Bureau Deputy Head, Tilahun Yimaldu, said the center has been executing activities that could help prevent and control the diseases in collaboration with Lions Club International. The five-year program would benefit many residents by conducting complex surgery and distributing mosquito nets, he added. Some 90,000 people who remained visually impaired for many years regained their sight through eye cap surgery last Ethiopian year alone, he said, adding that bed nets were also distributed to more than 1.2 million people. The state government is ready to provide all the necessary support for the center as the integrated trachoma control and treatment as well as malaria prevention activities support the ongoing development works in the state, he said. Carter Center Ethiopia Representative Teshome Gebre on his part said the center has carried out ophthalmic surgery and distributed bed nets with over 66 million birr last year. Out of the allotted money 146 million birr would be covered by the center and the remaining 45 million birr by Lions Club, he added. More than 200 officials drawn from the Ministry of Health, the state health bureau, zone and woreda health offices as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations are in attendance of the two-day conference. |
