Minister says millennium celebration contributing to speedy development

Diredawa, January 12, 2008 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Millennium being celebrated colorfully with various events has been contributing to the speedy development of the country, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said.

Culture and Tourism Minister, Ambassador Mohammud Dirir, told WIC that the celebration has been contributing its share to the socio-economic growth of the country as the tourist flow has significantly increased in the millennium.

He noted that the decision of the African Union to name the millennium as African Millennium has enabled it to get international recognition.

The conducive situation created in the millennium and the mutual understanding evolved should be exploited, the minister said, adding that the celebration is a good opportunity to consolidate institutions that ensure the constitutional order.

Besides, the growing tolerance among nations and nationalities is the positive aspect of the millennium celebrations, according to Ambassador Mohammud who stated that the millennium has also created good opportunity to ensure peace and engage the public on development activities.

The ongoing image building and the economic growth being registered in the country have been providing immense contribution to the growth of the tourism sector, according to the minister.
