WFP head lauds community participatory natural, environmental works in Tigray

Axum, January 7, 2008 (WIC) – The community participatory natural and environmental protection activities in Tigray State are practical indicators to the possibility of ensuring sustainable development in Ethiopia within a short period, World Food Program (WFP) said.
After visiting WFP assisted development activities in Adwa Woreda yesterday, Program Unit Head Sonali Wickrema said at the farmers festival the activities are practical evidences that show it is possible to bring about sustainable development in the country.
Wickrema said the basin development, forestry, seedling transplantation, irrigation development, pasture and water development activities in the state, and in Adwa Woreda in particular, are encouraging, adding that this attests to the industriousness and love of work of the people.
The head pointed out that Ethiopia’s goal of eliminating poverty could become a reality with the efforts of the public and the organization will redouble its support to improve production and productivity in the country.
Land Project Coordinator with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Betru Nedesa, said on his part the development works carried out by the project are promising and vividly show the determination of the public for development.
The natural and environmental protection activities carried out in the state are exemplary to other states, he said, adding that inhabitants of the state should further enhance the efforts underway to sustainably ensure food security and make poverty history.
Adwa Woreda Agriculture and Rural Development Office Head, Goitom Yibrah, said on his part various soil and water conservation, irrigation development and dam works have been carried out through the WFP project in the woreda benefiting more than 25,000 people.
The development activities executed during the last two years include construction of more than 7,000 kilometers of soil and stone terraces, forest and grazing land development on 13 hectares of land and irrigation development on 35 hectares of land, he added.
During the festival, prizes were given to model farmers, experts and officials of 17 woredas who have contributed to the speeding up of development. |
