Close to quarter million people undergo VCT in SNNP State |

Addis Ababa, February 25 (WIC) - Close to 250,000 people have undergone Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) in SNNP State during the past six months, the state HIV/AIDS prevention and control office disclosed. Bureau Representative Habtamu Beyene told WIC that 247,105 people have conducted VCT in the third round anti-HIV/AIDS campaign in the state. The public has given due attention to the consolidated campaign underway in all zones and woredas of the state since the beginning of this Ethiopian year, he said. Some 14,460 of those who underwent VCT, 8,814 tested positive and have started taking antiretroviral drugs, according to the representative. Civil servants, religious institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations and people living with HIV/AIDS as well as the federal and state secretariat offices have been working in collaboration for the realization of the plan to provide VCT to 1.5 million inhabitants of the state in the millennium third round anti-HIV/AIDS campaign, he pointed out. Similarly, over 10,400 people have undergone VCT for HIV/AIDS in Harrari State in the half budget year, the state HIV/AIDS prevention and control office said. Office Head Dr. Abdurahman Ahmed said the office has been exerting efforts to contain the spread of the virus by consolidating VCT centers, creating public conversation forums, taking care of HIV/AIDS orphans and supporting people living with the virus. |
