WFP to organize mass walk to solicit fund for school-feeding program

Addis Ababa, April 30, 2008 (WIC) – The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said it would organize a mass walk at a national level so as to solicit fund for the school- feeding program it has been undertaking in Ethiopia.

WFP Country Director, Mohammed Diab, told journalists today that some 59 million children worldwide go to school with out having enough food.

The decline in production, famine and price hike on food items has reportedly been aggravating the problem, the director added.

A fund raising program would be held worldwide to help children who discontinue their education due to lack of food, he indicated.

The mass walk to be held in Addis Ababa, Hawassa, Diredawa, Desse, Gambella, Jijjiga, Mekelle and Adama towns the coming June 1, 2008 is part of the program, according to him.

More than 400,000 children in Afar, Oromia, Amhara, SNNP, Tigray and Somali states are benefiting from the school-feeding program, it was learnt.
