Addis Ababa, April 30, 2008 (WIC) – Ensuring the health and safety of workers is mandatory so as to boost production and productivity by expediting ongoing development activities in the country, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs said.
Speaking at World Day for Safety and Health at Work celebrated at the ET Highland Horticulture Farm under the motto, “My life, my work, my safe work! Managing risk in the work environment”, State Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Mohammed Mealin, said that due attention should be given for the health and safety of workers in order to lift up the growing industrial sector to better level.
The State Minister indicated that millions of workers worldwide lose their lives and are exposed to various accidents for the absence of a system that guarantees safety and health at work.
The government of Ethiopia has attached due attention for the industrial sector as it has a profound desire to speed up development by ensuring a healthy labor relations in the sector, he said adding that a law has been formulated for the cause.
Ensuring safety and health at work place would help to have healthy workers and thus boost production and productivity, Mohammed further noted.
Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU) President, Kassahun Follo, said in his message read through his representative that eliminating work-related accidents is necessary to bring about sustainable development.
Ethiopian Employers Federation (EEF) President, Teshome Zewde, on his part said that the federation has been working in collaboration with pertinent institutions to boost production and productivity alongside the activities being exerted by the government to alleviate poverty and ensure good governance.
International Labor Organization (ILO) Director General, Juan Somavia, said in his message read through his representative that some 2.2 million people lose their lives due to work-related accidents.
Hence there is no alternative than ensuring safety and health at work to end such accidents, he added.
Some 300 guests attendance of the celebration, it was learnt.
