Addis Ababa, April 28, 2008 (WIC) - World Day for Safety and Health at Work was celebrated in the metropolis today.

Speaking at the celebration held to mark the day, Occupational Safety Supervision and Study Department Head with Addis Ababa City Social and Civil Affairs Bureau, Muluken Demse, said the attention given to work place and environmental safety and health is low, even though construction works, service delivery institutions and factories are expanding in the city.

The proclamations and policies issued to ensure the environmental safety and health of workers are requiring a lot of time, he said, further urging attention to the issue as the number of compatriots losing lives and becoming handicap is fast growing.

ILO-Sub Regional Office Senior Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, Franklin Muchiri, on his part recalled that Ethiopia was among the first countries to ratify ILO convention, and added that workers, employers and executive bodies should collaborate to realize the convention.

The public should also give due attention to safety and health both at work places and residential areas, he noted. Series of researches on the causes and effects of the problems should again be conducted, Muchiri stressed.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work was celebrated in the presence of civil servants, workers of factories and service delivery institutions.
