Girma Birru says local elections key in overall democratization process
Addis Ababa, April 20, 2008 - Minister of Trade and Industry said that the election of members of the kebelle and sub city councils held on Sunday takes a remarkable position in the overall democratization process.

Girma Birru while casting vote at kebelle 28 of the Yeka sub city on Sunday, told ENA reporters that election is a vital instrument that ensures the sovereignity of the people to elect their representatives in a democratic system.

According to the Minister, local elections play indispensable role in the democratization process as they are instruments of electing representatives to the lowest level of administration that decides on the day to day life of the public.

Political parties bear the responsibility of accepting the will of the people, Girma said, and underlined that the contestant parties should respect the right of the electorate to be governed by those who manage to win the majority vote.

He also said that the public should develop the culture of actively taking part in the election process.

Democracy is not a system that should be learned or copied only from abroad, rather it is an activity practiced and developed through process, Girma said, and added that the ongoing election is unique as lots of improvements have been made by drawing lessons from previous weaknesses.
