Addis
Ababa, April 20, 2008 - Minister of Trade
and Industry said that the election of members of the kebelle and sub city councils held on Sunday takes a
remarkable position in the overall democratization
process.
Girma Birru while casting vote at kebelle 28 of the Yeka
sub city on Sunday, told ENA reporters that election is
a vital instrument that ensures the sovereignity of the
people to elect their representatives in a democratic
system.
According to the Minister, local elections play
indispensable role in the democratization process as
they are instruments of electing representatives to the
lowest level of administration that decides on the day
to day life of the public.
Political parties bear the responsibility of accepting
the will of the people, Girma said, and underlined that
the contestant parties should respect the right of the
electorate to be governed by those who manage to win the
majority vote.
He also said that the public should develop the culture
of actively taking part in the election process.
Democracy is not a system that should be learned or
copied only from abroad, rather it is an activity
practiced and developed through process, Girma said, and
added that the ongoing election is unique as lots of
improvements have been made by drawing lessons from
previous weaknesses.
