Norway pledges to consolidate support to Mekelle University

Mekelle, April 12, 2008 (WIC) - Norway would consolidate its support to Mekelle University, according to the Norwegian Ambassador to Ethiopia.

Speaking at a discussion forum which dwelt on corruption prevention at Mekelle University yesterday, Ambassador Pieter Kjemprud, said the government of Norway would stand alongside the university in its efforts to train legal professionals and other capacity building activities that help combat corruption.

Advisor to the Norwegian Economic Minister, Eva Joly, on her part said corruption should be eliminated as it pushes the public into poverty by wrecking the economy of a country and disrupting peace.

Mekelle University President, Dr Mitku Haile, said the discussion would help the activities underway in the fight against corruption and building the capacity of law students.

He further said the discussion would help the university to carry out research works that focus on the anti-corruption struggle.

Senior lecturers at the university, state government officials including the Speaker of Tigray State Council attended the discussion.
