Addis Ababa, April 3, 2008 (WIC) - The registration of vital events contributes significantly toward designing the political structure of the country and its socio-economic policies, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said.
Speaking at the opening of a consultative workshop on the preparation for the establishment of vital events registration system in Ethiopia at UN Conference Center today, Commissioner Ambassador Kassa Gebrehiwot said the registration of vital events would also help ensure the rights of citizens.
Commissioner for the Rights of Children and Women with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Yeshareg Damte, on her part said the sample vital events registrations carried out in SNNP, Amhara and Tigray states could be taken as inputs for future registration of vital events.
A draft law which enables the conduct of registration of vital events in the country has been presented to the House of Peoples Representatives and referred by the latter to the legal committee, she recalled, adding that the absence of vital events registration could be considered as a violation of human rights.
The consultative workshop would enrich ideas and share experiences for the national draft law to be designed for vital events registration, Yeshareg stated.
United Nations Children’s Fund, Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, House of Peoples Representatives and partner organizations are in attendance of the two–day consultative workshop.
