Gov't will assist efforts of utilizing renewable energy resources: Ministry of Mines, Energy

Addis Ababa, November 27, 2007 (WIC) – The government will provide support for efforts of developing renewable energy so that the country could utilize its potential energy resources, the Ministry of Mines and Energy said.

Minister of Mines and Energy Alemayehu Tegenu said at the opening of a meeting on developing solar energy today that the government will assist efforts of developing hydropower, biomass, solar, wind and geothermal energies.

The Minister further indicated that the government has put in place a program of extending electricity through out the country and encouraging results are being registered.

Joint efforts of governmental, non-governmental organizations and the community are mandatory in speeding up the development of the energy sector and as long as they are in line with the government's development goals it will assist the efforts to promote the sector, he said.

Accordingly, electric power service, which the Solar Energy Foundation extended in Rema, a small village in North Shoa Zone, for more than 1,000 residential houses and health institutions will expedite the benefit the country can obtain from the sector, the minister noted.

Solar Energy Foundation Director, Dr. Harald Schutzeichel, said more than 1,000 houses have accessed electric power which has enabled 6,000 people to attend night school and improve their businesses.

There is a plan to establish five solar energy centers in various parts of the country next year, he added.

Representative of Solar Energy Foundation Ethiopia, Samson Tsegaye, said though the sector is new to Ethiopia 1,100 houses, health institutions, schools and governmental offices in the village have accessed electricity following the activities of the foundation during the last two years.
