Tigray War Survivors Ass'n to conduct telethon in USA, Canada

Mekelle, November 22, 2007 (WIC) – The Tigray War Survivors Association said it will conduct telethon in the US and Canada after a fortnight.

Association Manager Alem Gebremeskel said today that the association needs strong financial backing to improve the livelihood of its members.

Efforts were made to collect money locally last Ethiopian year, he said, adding that it will also stage telethon after two weeks in Washington DC., Las Vegas, Bay Area, Seattle, Boston and Denver States of the US and Toronto City of Canada.

The Association has managed to engage 95 percent of its members in various fields of work with the financial assistance of supporters at home and abroad and the income which will be obtained from the upcoming telethon will be spent on training, education, physical support and loan for its members, the manager pointed out.

Ethiopians residing in the US and Canada have established committees and are working strenuously for the success of the telethon, Alem said, adding that assisting the war survivors who sustained physical disability while struggling to ensure peace and democracy in the country would have a significant meaning and message.

The manager recalled that the association raised more than 22 million birr from the first round of the telethon held last year at Sheraton Addis and has laid foundation for the construction of its headquarters with 11 million birr granted by the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT).

Established 11 years ago, the association has more than 100,000 members, it was learnt.
