Addis Ababa, November 10, 2007 (WIC) - The Coalition for Unity and Democracy Party led by Honorable Ayele Chameso disclosed that it has been making preparations to take part in the upcoming local election.
He told WIC that the party is preparing to field candidates that compete in areas where it can easily operate.
Local councils are where the people participate directly and are the basis for political struggle and strengthening parties, Ayele said, adding that CUD will however compete in limited areas due to capacity limitations.
Asked whether it is possible for a disintegrated party to take part in an election, he replied that all the CUD families are one despite differences in outlook.
CUD members in different parts of the country are getting organized and recruiting candidates, Ayele said, adding that efforts would be exerted to rehabilitate the weakened spirit of supporters following the 2005 election.
He further indicated that the party will conduct a general assembly tomorrow to elect its leadership in line with the deadline set by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia. Party members at home and abroad have been summoned to attend the assembly, Ayele revealed. CUD members who collaborated with forces that attempted to violently dismantle the constitutional order and rejected peaceful political struggle would not be allowed to participate in the conference, according to Ayele who reiterated that it is impossible to hold violence as an alternative and hide in a party that pursues peaceful struggle.
The conference is being held in accordance with the statute of the party and the result will be submitted to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia before the deadline, he added. |
