Ethiopian deportees say Shaebiya detaining, harassing Ethiopians in Eritrea |

Axum, November 7, 2007 (WIC) - Shaebiya is detaining and harassing Ethiopians in Eritrea labeling them as spies, according to Ethiopians recently deported to via Rama. They told WIC that the Shaebiya has been perpetrating untold sufferings on Ethiopians living in the various towns of Eritrea. One of the deportees jailed for seven years in Hazhaz Prison in Asmara town, Kibra Gebretinsae, said Shaebiya has currently intensified its harassment on Ethiopians residing in the country. Many Ethiopians are languishing in prisons without trial, Kibra said, adding that Ethiopian inmates in the prison she was jailed in were not allowed to mix and talk. A youth deported after being jailed for a year, Tsegay Belay, said Shaebiya has detained hundreds of Ethiopians at the various police stations in the country. He also stated that residents of Asmara town saw the Ethiopians off weeping till they reached the outskirt of the city when they were deported by Shaebiya. According to Inspector Gebreyesus Gezahegn, Public Relations Head of Central Tigray Zone Police,47 of the 837 Ethiopians deportees were imprisoned from one to seven years. |
