Over 1,000 Eritreans flee to Ethiopia through Central Tigray Zone front in eight months

Axum, May 07, 2007 (WIC) – More than 1,000 Eritreans have fled to Ethiopia through Mereb and Ahferom fronts to escape the oppression and murder of Shaebia, according to the Central Tigray Zone Police.

Zonal Commander Chief Inspector Berhane Petros told journalists today that with the number of Eritreans entering Ethiopia is continuously increasing with the aggravating atrocities perpetrated by Shaebia against the people.

Accordingly, 1,049 Eritreans including a VoA journalist based in Asmara have entered Ethiopia through the Mereb Lehe and Ahferom fronts in the past seven months

Among the Eritrean that fled were 294 soldiers, 518 students,74 civil servants, a policeman, 161 laborers and farmers, the Chief Inspector said.

Two of those Eritreans who requested anonymity said the government has suppressed the human and democratic rights of the people and is causing unbearable misery on them and added that the people as a result are being forced to flee.

Shaebia's support for terrorists instead of responding to the need of the people at a time when the Eritrean economy has plunged into crisis has forced them to express their opposition in different ways, they explained.

They further indicated their satisfaction with the humane treatment of the Ethiopian defense forces upon their arrival to Ethiopia.

Close to 3,000 Eritreans, including 519 soldiers and dozens of civil servants and farmers, have similarly entered Ethiopia through the North West and eastern zones of Tigray State during the last eight months, Chief Inspector Berhane recalled.
