Women urged to ensure equality in upcoming Millennium

Adama, March 06, 2007 (WIC) - The new millennium should be an epoch when women extricate themselves from backward traditional practices and economic dependence thus asserting their equality, the Adama town Women's Affairs Office underscored.

Office Head, Kebebush Seifu, said at a candle light ceremony held here yesterday in connection with March 8, International Women's Day, that women should ensure their participation in development endeavors by emancipating themselves from deep-rooted oppressions working hand in hand for better economic development.

The participation of women in the political and economic spheres was low during the past regimes due to the presence of backward and harmful traditional practices, the head recalled and called upon women to work jointly for the implementation of women policy designed by the government.

Women should strive for the creation of a democratic order, realization of good governance and economic growth as well as the implementation of the development strategy designed by the government to bring about tangible results in the new Millennium, Kebebush said.

Preventing harmful traditional practices perpetrated on women and ensuring the respect of women's rights and changing the wrong attitude of the public towards women is the responsibility of all, she further noted.

Mayor Jemal Abaso on his part said that women should exert efforts to register growth in all economic sectors.
