US Global AIDS appreciates Ethiopia's achievements in containing HIV/AIDS

Addis Ababa, December 12, 2007 (WIC) - Ethiopia is undertaking encouraging activities to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS, according to US Global AIDS.

US Global AIDS Office Assistant Coordinator, Michelle Moloney-Kitts, said at a teleconference held in the US Embassy with Ethiopian journalists that the relentless preventive activities of the government and other institutions have enlisted the country among those reducing the prevalence of the virus.

Ethiopia is one of the 15 countries that benefit from President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the coordinator said, adding that Ethiopia has obtained more than 496 million dollars between 2004 and 2007 for the prevention of the virus.

Preventing the disease is an indispensable way to halt its spread and PEPFAR is currently assisting programs in fifteen countries, including Ethiopia, with a view to preventing the disease globally in an integrated manner.

USA is keen to work in collaboration with the government of Ethiopia and the support will further continue to prevent the disease, she said, adding that they will work in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders.
