Agreement of Tigray, Kasala states described as essential instrument to consolidate peace, trade |
| Addis Ababa, March 14, 2006 (wic) - The agreement signed by the Tigray state and the state of Kasala last week would be instrumental in reinforcing sound trade relations and ensuring sustainable peace for the people living along the border, Chief Administrator of Tigray state said. The Chief Administrator,Tsegay Berhe, told WIC that the agreement signed in Bahirdar on March 8, 2006 in areas of security, trade, culture and sports are crucial in promoting peace and economic development in both states. He said detailed agreement was worked out to benefit the bordering regions in line with the Ethio-Sudanese Joint Border Development Commission singed in 1992 E.C. The agreement signed between the two bordering states at the side meeting of the 8th Ethio- Sudanese Joint Border Development Commission was also key to strengthening the growing trade exchange and enhancing the effort underway to use Port Sudan. The agreement ,according to the Chief Administrator,is also of paramount importance to jointly patrol the common border and fend off anti-peace elements like Shaebia and consolidate peace and security in the area. He said the agreement enables the Tigay state to gain experience and technical support in irrigation development from the Kasala state and the Tigray state on its part would share its experience in service rendering fields through training. Tsegaye further noted that the two states would also make cultural and sports cooperation by conducting symposiums on matter of cultural concern and encourage visits of scholars, students, businessmen and administrators. The implementation of the border trade amounting to 2,000 birr without letter of credit would strengthen the brotherly relations of the two countries, he said. The Chief Administrator also called on the commitment of citizens and local administrators of the bordering states for the implementation of the agreement. |
