| Mekele, March 3, 2006
(WIC) - Scholars said the victory of Adwa offers a big lesson to the present generation in cementing its unity and standing up together to wipe out poverty and backwardness. Scholars from Addis Ababa and Mekele universities who visited the historical sites of Adwa and its environs in connection with the 110th anniversary of the victory of Adwa said the defeat of colonial invaders at the battle fronts of Soloda ,Mariam Shewito and Raiye was the reflection of Ethiopian unity and gallantry. Dr. Teklehaimanot Gebresilassie, a History lecturer at the Addis Ababa University, said the Italian colonial force that tried to trample on the sovereignty and freedom of the people was defeated by our forefathers. That was made possible because all Ethiopian nations and nationalities under the leadership of Emperor Menelik joined hands to pay any price for their freedom, integrity and unity,he explained. The scholar said the victory of Adwa was a significant turning point in the history of the freedom of black people in the world. The present generation should also follow the example of the patriotic forefathers to defeat poverty and enhance the development of the nation, the historian underscored. Dr. Mulugeta Fiseha of Addis Ababa University and Dr. Kifle Woldearegai on their part underlined the need to preserve the site where the resounding victory against the colonial power was achieved as a heritage. |
