Iranian embassy organizes seminar to commemorate Ethiopian muezzin Bilal Al-Habeshi |
| Addis Ababa, March 2, 2006 (wic) - A seminar commemorating the famous Ethiopian muezzin Bilal Al-Habeshi took place yesterday at the Guenet Hotel. The seminar which was entitled “Bilal -- a symbol of freedom” was organized by the Cultural section of the Iranian embassy in Ethiopia to commemorate the struggle waged by the first Ethiopian muezzin towards freedom of religion and thought. Speaking at the seminar, Director of the Cultural section with the embassy, Alirezza Onarbaksh said Bilal is a pride for Ethiopia and the whole of Africa. According to Onarbaksh, Ethio-Iranian relations had also its origin 1,400 years ago with the brotherhood of the Ethiopian Bilal and the Persian Salman. He further noted the two countries have now reinvigorated their relations by signing cultural accord. Member of the executive body with the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Council, Hajji Mussa Mohammed, and Hajji Tajudin Ahmed,Vice President of the Sheria court ,commended the initiative taken by the Iranian embassy to commemorate the history of the famous Ethiopian muezzin. |
