Ambassador of Greece pledges more assistance to Ethiopia |
| Axum, March 2, 2006 (wic) - The Greek Ambassador to Ethiopia said his government would scale up humanitarian and development assistance to Ethiopia. According to Ambassador Dionisios Kountoureas the Greek government has decided that Ethiopia be the top beneficiary country among those developing countries which receive support from Greece. The ambassador was speaking at the inaugural event of a modern feeding center and a kitchen constructed by his government in St. Yared Children's Center located here. Ambassador Dionisios said his government has been participating in health, education and agricultural projects launched in the country to reduce poverty, adding that it would also continue its support to the Children's Center so as to solve the problem of children in a sustainable manner. Program Director of the Center, Tesfatsion Rebeso, said on his part that the feeding center and kitchen were constructed with 800,000 birr assistance of the Greek government. The Director said preparations are also finalized to construct 12 bed rooms in an effort to render full services to children living in the Center with 1.1 million birr allotted by the Greek government. Some 334 orphans living in the Center are being supported by Rita Marley,the wife of the late Bob Marley,the German and Greek governments in St. Yared Children's Center that is administered by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. |
