| Addis Ababa, March 1, 2006
(WIC) - Over 103 million USD has been earned from the export of sesame to China, Europe and various African countries during the last seven months, according to the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Export Trade Promotion Department Head with the Ministry, Abera Geyessa, told WIC today that the export of sesame constituted 30 percent of the total export of the country thus surpassing coffee which has been generating 60 percent of the country's foreign currency earnings up until 1995 E.C. According to the Head, the export earning in those months was the highest in the export history of the country as even the foreign currency obtained in the year 1997 E.C from oil seeds accounted only for 101 million USD. Abera said there has been a growing demand for sesame in the world market and China alone imported 47 percent of the total produce in line with the trade agreement signed with the country. He noted that the necessary support is being rendered to producers of sesame to help them harvest quality and quantity produce sustainably. |
