Credit, Savings company to disburse over 166mln birr loan to farmers in Tigray state |

2006 (WIC) - Dedebit Credit and Savings Share Company said it will begin providing 166.6 million birr in loan for beneficiaries of extension package and users of agricultural inputs in Tigray state beginning this month. General Manager of the company, Ataklti Kiros, told WIC recently that the company will start giving credit to 144,000 new and existing beneficiaries of extension package and users of agricultural inputs for the production year of 1998/99 E.C. The credit would be given to farmers in 31 arid woredas of the state. Accordingly,104 million birr is allocated to 60,000 new beneficiaries of the provision of loan, while 40 million birr will be channeled to 77,000 farmers who requested to get credit for a second time this year,he explained. The extension package beneficiaries have reportedly indicated that they will engage in dairy production, cattle rearing and irrigation farming to improve their livelihood. In addition, the company will provide 22.6 million birr for 7,000 farmers for the purchase of selected seeds and fertilizer with a view to enhancing productivity,Ataklti added. According to the General Manager, the company which strives to support the government’s policy in poverty reduction has 154,000 beneficiaries of its credit services. |
